For over five years now, I have been regularly enjoying fresh fruit and vegetable juices and I must say that the benefits for my overall health and vitality are impressing!
In our fast-paced society we often sacrifice health for what is easiest and quickest often failing to meet the recommended daily allowances for a multitude of vitamins and minerals. Take potassium for example, it is a very important mineral necessary for the heart, kidneys and other organs to function properly, and helps regulate blood pressure.
The best way to address these deficiencies is to include a variety of fresh organic fruits and vegetables in your diet as well as JUICING.
When you drink juice, highly concentrated vitamins, minerals and enzymes rapidly enter the bloodstream absorbing all of the nutritional benefits of the fruits and vegetables.
Why juicing ?
When you process the fruits and vegetables through a juicer, the juicer extracts all the fluids and nutrients from the solids.
Fresh juices are quickly digested and assimilated by the body.
Fresh juice is digested in a matter of minutes, with very little effort giving the digestive system a well deserved break. This means once you consume your fresh juice, the vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals (plant chemical compounds, like resveratrol, a natural cancer killer) and antioxidants are immediately available to your cells and tissues.
When to juice ?
It is best to drink the juices as soon as they are pressed preferably on an empty stomach (30 minutes before your main meals).

Fresh pressed juice is like drinking a natural vitamin filled with living enzymes, essential minerals, antioxidants which are vital for optimal health. Bottled juices are pasteurised which means they are heated and processed which can destroy vitamins and minerals.

Wake Me Up Green Juice Recipe (Serves 1)
– 1 small organic pear
– 2 small organic green apples
– 2 small organic carrots
– 1 inch ginger root
– 1 large bunch of fresh raw organic spinach
Wash all of the ingredients. Chop pear, apples, carrots and push all ingredients through your juicer.
Without becoming paranoid (which would increase our stress levels and would not be very naturopathic-like!) , it is clear that we are daily exposed to various toxins from our environment.
The air we breathe (especially if we live in town) , the food we eat, the water we drink, the different products we put on our bodies (cosmetics, skin care, deodorants, perfumes … ) and the ones we use inside our homes ( cleaning products …) influence our health.
To live in harmony and avoid the accumulation of toxins in our body , it is best to limit our exposure. For example, there are many very simple alternatives to replace harmful cleaning products (see next article). It is also possible to increase our consumption of organic produce (see tips on how to eat healthy on a budget here), to ensure that the water we drink is filtered and to purify the air in our homes (see here).
In addition, there are foods that will strengthen our immune system and support our liver which are both necessary in promoting effective detoxification.
Here is a list of some of these “detox” foods to have and use in your kitchen :
✦ Greens : chlorophyll is the compound that gives vegetables their green colour, and it has many beneficial effects. Chlorophyll may actually be able to bind cancer-causing chemicals (such as heterocyclic amines found in meat cooked at high temperature), thereby allowing these chemicals to be excreted by the body instead of being absorbed. It’s best to include a green vegetable in at least two meals a day. Especially good food sources of chlorophyll are spinach, parsley, green beans and arugula, but all greens will have some chlorophyll. Have greens raw in a salad or sauté in coconut oil as a side.
✦ Beets : the famous red pigment in beets promotes the detox process carried out by our liver. It also serves as a potent antioxidant in addition to being nutrient-rich. I love to eat them raw, grated with carrots in my salads.
✦ Garlic : in addition to garlic’s detoxifying properties, some studies suggest that populations with higher garlic intake have decreased risk for stomach and colorectal cancers. Garlic also may help protect against cardiovascular disease. For maximum benefit, have some garlic daily.
✦ Turmeric : known for its antioxidant properties, it is also long been used as a natural anti-inflammatory.
✦ Cruciferous Vegetables: these vegetables not only help promote liver detoxification, but also contain indole-3-carbinol, a compound that helps balance estrogen levels. Cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, and Brussels sprouts.
